Visualizing Medieval Places

Humanities Entity Recognizer and Medieval French

One of the major results of the NYU PSL Digital Humanities Partnership funded by the NYU PSL Global Alliance in 2017-18, was the creation of a toolkit for practical, language agnostic named entity recognition:

It offers a whitebox solution for robust handling of different types of entities, different languages, styles, and domains, and varying levels of structure in texts, making it perfect for an active learning approach to annotating named entities in the generically heterogeneous corpus medieval French exhibiting a high degree of orthographic instability.

In the near future a basic, unsorted list of geographic entities for medieval French will be published in the Resources repository of VMP’s sister digital project about medieval French, OpenMedFr. This list has been generated by the Humanities Entity Recognizer.
